SLAIS: The iSchool at UBC Information Technology Laboratories

There are two SLAIS Information Technology Labs, Kitimat and Terrace. These are multi-purpose spaces intended for study, working on assignments, printing, and in the case of Terrace, holding classes as well as workshops. All lab computers reside on the SLAIS domain space, thus they have access to FTP, I-Drive student storage space and the Internet at large.

The smaller lab, Kitimat, is home to ten (10) student PC workstations, a 21.5 inch and a 27 inch iMacs for design and video editing use, two high-end scanners and the SLAIS print station. A handful of research stations also are present and reserved for faculty and RAs.

Terrace, the larger lab, contains thirty (30) student PC workstations as well as a ceiling projector setup for presentations from the instructor station.

Both Macs in Kitimat possess installations of the latest Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium, a software package containing Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat Pro and other Adobe mainstays available for web design, video and document creation tasks. Also present is Camtasia, a screen-casting (recording) and video editing application to further support these types of projects.

Each PC workstation in both labs runs Windows 7 Professional and contains a plethora of software useful for any kind of task you may encounter at SLAIS from simple document processing to integrated library systems (ILS) and other specialized applications.  All workstations also have Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium [Photoshop CS5 Extended, Illustrator CS5, InDesign CS5.5, Dreamweaver CS5.5, Flash Professional CS5.5, Flash Catalyst CS5.5, Fireworks CS5, Acrobat X Pro, Bridge CS5, Device Central CS5.5] and Adobe Captivate 5.5 for your convenience.

If you should encounter freely available applications you believe the lab computers should have installed to support LIS and Archival studies or you want to please contact mss@mail.ubc.ca or a SLAIS STA.

Other equipment available on-loan to students and faculty including PC and Mac laptops, iPads, E-Readers, digital cameras, digital projectors among others. Please see the SLAIS Front Desk for more information on availability and booking.
