SLAIS ELECTRONIC Discussion Lists

SLAIS uses discussion lists to make it easy for a message to be sent to a large group of people at the same time. For example, most courses have their own lists so that the professor and students can exchange messages, and there are lists for students in specific programs (e.g. mlis-students). There is also a list that allow messages to be broadcast to all SLAIS students (slais-students). After you join a listserv, any message you send to it will be copied automatically to everyone on the list.

In the past people would often post to the school-wide list, even though their message was for people in a specific program, because they weren't certain that everyone in that program was signed up on the program-specific list. This meant that people often received email that had nothing to do with them. The new policy is that no one will be able to sign up to the school-wide list. However, once you sign up for your program specific list, you will automatically be signed up to the school-wide list. In this way, people may have complete confidence that posting to the program-specific list will be as effective a means of communication as posting to the school-wide list.

How to Subscribe to Discussion Lists

For all except the SlaisJobs list use these instructions:

From the email account you wish to use, send the following message. Be sure to leave the subject line blank:

To: majordomo@interchange.ubc.ca
Subject:
[The text of the message should read ...]
subscribe XXXX [where XXXX is the name of the listserv]
end

For example,

To: majordomo@interchange.ubc.ca
Subject:
Message: subscribe mlis-students
end

How to Unsubscribe from Discussion Lists

You unsubscribe exactly the same way as you subscribe, except that you use the word 'unsubscribe' instead of 'subscribe' in your message.

Important: listserve requests are sent to the majordomo address shown above. Do not send subscribe or unsubscribe requests to the list address.

Please note, if you use Internet Explorer and an e-mail program like HotMail you may experience subscription problems. IE browser normally has the Rich Text Format (RTF) conversion button set as a default. When subscribing to the list-serves, the extra data automatically added when doing the conversion to RTF messes up Majordomo, causing the subscription request to be rejected.

How to Post a Message

Send your message to the address of the list. For example, to reach the MLIS students's list, make sure it's addressed to "mlis-students@interchange.ubc.ca"
