CLA Student
Chapter Meetings - Summer 2000
Wednesday, May
31, 2000 Agenda
1. Mission Statement
2. Ideas for promoting
the SLAIS CLA Student Chapter
1. Mission
Statement
The beginning of
the meeting was spent brainstorming ideas for the CLA Student Chapter mission
statement. Nicole Aerts will pool the ideas together to draft a version
of the mission statement
2. Ideas
for promoting the SLAIS CLA Student Chapter
-
We would like all students
to have input into the CLA Student Chapter. To this end, we will need to
promote the CLA Student Chapter at the beginning of the year. It would
be nice to have a launching activity and perhaps go into classes in September.
-
We should create a draft
of ideas to promote the CLA Student Chapter, then send to the listserv
In order to raise awareness and promote the CLA Student Chapter by providing
events (seminars, presentations, guest speakers, etc.) which reflect the
diversity of librarianship in Canada
-
We could look at the
different CLA interest groups; we may want to tone down any special libraries
focus so as not to conflict with SLA
-
We need to contact the
CLA to request some financial assistance; perhaps SLAIS can give us a photocopy
code - we need to ask Ken Haycock. We need money for simple things: coffee
and snacks at events, gifts for speakers, etc.
Possible ideas for
CLA events
-
Opportunities in libraries
-
Opportunities in resume
writing
-
The main idea is to
educate
-
We want to work cooperatively
with other student groups
It might be nice to
put links to other CLA student groups on our website
Next meeting: Wednesday,
July 12 at 6 p.m. We will discuss the CLA Conference which Christina Zeller
will be attending and September plans
Wednesday, July
12 2000 Agenda
1. CLA Conference
2. September/ 2000-2001
Plans
1. CLA Conference
Christina Zeller
reported on her experience at the CLA Conference.
Observations:
-
A very good opportunity
to meet other library school students
-
Very intensive: student
representatives were required to do a lot of volunteering and even wrote
an article each about a session they attended
-
Career advice session:
job market should be great in 5-10 years and taking contracts is a good
start and doesn't affect one's credibility
-
Major issue at AGM:
CLA fees are too high; CLA is trying to move to a model where money doesn't
come from memberships; want to encourage new librarians to join CLA; a
full scholarship for students should be ready in about a year
2. September/2000-2001
Plans
We will need to
get a new coordinator in September; possible idea: a presentation on special
collections and rare books; we should meet with LASSA, CLA & SLA to
coordinate schedules towards the end of September; it would be nice to
schedule an event around incoming students' schedules; we should go into
classes in early September
A possible idea
for September is to organize an event about librarians working in special
collections
It would also be
nice to organize a mentorship program
Deborah Hutchison
had an idea that we could perhaps think about planning a colloquium for
this coming year where students and professionals could speak about relevant
experiences (i.e. Professional experiences, papers, children's courses,
presentation skills, interview skills, etc.)
Friday, August
11 Agenda
1. September plans
2. Positions to
be filled in SLAIS Student Chapter
3. Miscellaneous
1. September
Plans
Deborah Hutchison
talked to Sylvia Crooks regarding our plans for a September talk about
special collections. Brenda Peterson from UBC would be a good choice as
would Mary Ann McDougall from VPL. Ideally, this would be a 12:15 p.m.
talk during the week of September 11-15. Carolyn Buck will contact these
two people to make the arrangements.
2. Positions
to be filled in SLAIS Student Chapter
There are a number
of positions to be filled in the Student Chapter. Some of these may include
mentorship program coordinator, discussion group coordinator, legacy project
coordinator, coordinator and liaison. Deborah Hutchison agreed to take
on the coordinator position for now. Christina Zeller will put up a page
on the website about positions that are open.
3. Miscellaneous
The CLA website
is up and running and includes our goals, membership information, meetings,
events, meeting minutes and a number of links to CLA.
We are getting a
SLAIS CLA Student Chapter fund set up. |
