CLA Student Chapter Meeting BCLA-CLA SLAIS Student Chapter
Present: Megan Zandstra, Andrea Ryce, Suzanne Ottewell, Alex McNeur, Deborah Copeman Regrets: Reiko Tagami, Colleen Alstad, Ellen George 1. BCLA Board Meeting Report · Andrea attended the first BCLA Board Meeting of the year on January 23 · Some things that might be of interest to students: o YAACS is looking for interested students to either join their board or help out with events, contact chair Eva Wilson; o the new online membership database will be launched sometime in March, and the online membership application and payment system should follow soon after; o minutes of the ALPS AGM are up on the website, as well as the powerpoints and notes from their annual conference held at Kwantlen College; o information on the BCLA Conference in Harrison Hot Springs in now available online. · Andrea suggested that the Student Chapter could gain funding from BCLA if there was a “Student Interest Group” as part of the association. She will look into this further for the next meeting. 2. CACUL Grant · Megan has received word from CLA in Ottawa that our Student Chapter has secured one of the Continuing Education grants · There is some confusion about what the workshop will be on: our grant application focused on the idea of “Negotiations Skills for Librarians”, but since then we have had second thoughts as to the subject · There was some discussion on having “Conflict Resolution” as our workshop theme · Megan and Andrea will follow up with emails and meetings with other librarians and take some suggestions from them 3. International Librarianship · Andrea & Megan announced that they do not have enough time to devote to this project as they now have to plan the CACUL event · It was decided that we will not hold an International Librarianship event this term, perhaps someone will follow up with one next fall 4. Mentorship Lunch – Feb 13 · Suzanne said she has had very limited response to her email invitation to the lunch · She asked that some people come and talk about their own experiences with their mentors so far · Megan, Deborah and Andrea volunteered 5. Professional Experience Event (virtual report) · Reiko has had responses from both Ellen George and Jaqui Haines · She has decided to broaden the subject to include Directed Studies experiences as well · Possible event date: early March The next meeting date has not been set yet (it will probably be during the week of Feb. 24 – 28)
