1) Welcome and Introduction to BCLA/CLA. -Ellen chairs, provides an introduction and welcomes new and old members.
2) Approval of Previous Minutes (September 27, 2011) -Rachel motions to approve, Shawna seconds.
3) Approval of Previous Agenda -Ellen motions to approve, Cynthia seconds.
4) BCLA Report (Fiona Chiu) -Working
on organizing a talk with Marjorie Mitchell (Learning services
librarian at UBC Okanagan; former pres of BCLA) which could take place
mid-November. -Leanna Jantzi, editor of BCLA Browser (which used to
be BCLA Reporter, a hard copy) is looking for submissions for update on
BCLA at UBC. -Fiona will attend BCLA meeting on November 14th. -LASSA
has asked for a representative from BCLA/CLA to attend a planning
meeting for the SLAIS Anniversary Celebration. Ellen confirmed that she
will attend on November 4th from 11-12. -There was discussion about the BCLA conference in April 2012 in Richmond and the group talked about the following: - the deadline to submit papers is in November
- BCLA is looking for “hospitality conveners” to
host conference sessions. Shawna has done this in the past. She
explained that conveners introduce speakers and facilitate sessions on
one of the days, and then are able to sit in on sessions during the
rest of the conference. If interested please contact Ellen. -Ellen also shared that BCLA is hoping to arrange a “Pub Night” in January for special interest groups to meet up.
5) CLA Report (Shawna) -Shawna has touched base with CLA regarding conference calls, and they will take place on a need-to-chat basis. -The CLA conference is in Ottawa in May and they are accepting proposals. -Ellen
confirmed that CLASC (Canadian Libraries Are Serving Children) has been
accepted as a virtual network through the CLA. They will be presenting
at the conference in May. Stay tuned for more details!
6) Communications and Website Report (Anna) - Cynthia briefly discussed consolidating and making all documents available through Google docs.
7) ALPS Report (Cynthia) -ALPS
event “Getting Hired in Higher Education” was a success. The 5
panellists were excellent and it was well attended by 20 people. -Cynthia has written a piece about the event to be submitted to the Yodeller (ALPS publication) as well as the Browser. -There
will be an ALPS meeting in early December at the SFU Harbour Centre.
Registration information will be out soon. It consists of panels and
individual speakers and a small lunch. Price is reduced for BCLA
members.
8) YAACS Report (Rachel) -Lit Circle Oct. 27th at Calhoun's- all are welcome and bring a favourite Halloween story! -Children's Literature conference at UBC in April. Call out for papers and people interested in volunteering in any capacity. -Stick around for the YAACS meeting for more events and news.
9) Treasurer Report (Cynthia) -Cynthia
to meet with LASSA treasurer on Monday Oct. 31st to clear up
discrepancy between our books and theirs. Will update us at next
meeting.
10) New Business
Elections: Tour coordinators: Dana and Julia to share position. Vote: approved. CLA representative: Julia McKnight. Vote: approved. Treasurer: Jamie Fong. Vote: approved.
Positions
still open: ALPS rep, BCLA rep and YAACS co-rep (optional). Write-ups
with descriptions of all positions can be found on the website. Shawna
and Fiona reminded folks that serving as a BCLA or CLA rep could make
you eligible for bursaries to attend the provincial and national
conferences.
Fundraising: -There
was some discussion of reviving the SLAIS cookbook idea but maybe
digital. Pairing the cookbook sale with free baking was proposed. More
to come at next meeting.
9) Date and time of next meeting -Tuesday, November 22 at 12-1 p.m. in the Trail Room -Cynthia or Anna will chair.
