CLA Student Chapter Steering Committee Meeting

Wednesday, November 24, 1999

1.  The University of Western Ontario has a student chapter. Gordon Coleman contacted Western to find out how to set up a student chapter. They had no real guidelines, but they have had events (ie. speakers, President of CLA attended an "opening event", they co-sponsor events with SLA

There is no place in the structure of CLA for students, so there is a lack of representation within the CLA structure. CLA sponsors a student to go to the annual conference to act as a "runner". School pays transportation costs, CLA pays accomodation. Conference takes place next term in Edmonton.

2.  Ideas for the SLAIS Student Chapter

  • Discussion groups relating to library issues could be set up. Reading(s) are selected and students join the group to discuss.
  • The CLA group could coordinate discussions/issues, etc. with SLA and with other groups at SLAIS (ie. the feminist discussion group).
  • Create a CLA listserv - could send minutes of meetings to it
  • We would like students to receive one year free membership to CLA
  • Have them send one NL or two to the chapter
  • We don't need to have a coordinator for every function
  • Legacy project - something we could produce to represent our 2 years at SLAIS; something to have an impact (ie. literacy project: connect with a literacy group) Salons (ie. rare book / special publications society or group; copyright group?, etc.) Syliva Crooks has a lot of contacts in this regard; she may be able to suggest speakers) Perhaps thinking of themes would help. We may want to contact people outside the library community.
3.  Structure of the CLA Executive:
Meeting Coordinator - gives notice of meetings, distributes agenda, books room, runs meeting, etc.
Recorder - records minutes of meetings
Discussion Groups Coordinator
Speakers Coordinator
Mentorship Coordinator (CLA doesn't have a mentorship coordinator; don't want to conflict with SLA in this regard).
