CLA Student Chapter Meeting

October 23, 2000

1.  Welcome and introduction to the CLA
Deb Hutchison welcomed new members to the group and provided new attendees with membership material for CLA and a scholarship handbook. It was noted that membership in CLA is not a requirement for membership in the student chapter. An overview of CLA membership benefits and activities was provided.
Christina Zeller reported on her attendance at the last CLA conference.

2.  Update and reports on summer meetings and early fall activities and events
Three meetings of the chapter were held over the summer months. The special collections seminar was held in early September. Deb Hutchison noted that the seminar was fairly well attended and that there was excellent feedback regarding the speakers. She also noted that perhaps more advertising was required.
Other events included a ‘war stories’ practicum discussion evening. Information from this event will be linked to the upcoming LASSA practicum seminar.

3.  Vacant positions, discussion, and nominations
a) Coordinator
Deb Hutchison currently holds this position on a temporary basis. Responsibilities 
include relaying information between individuals responsible for particular events, organizing meetings, informing the membership of the association and the School of upcoming meetings, preparing meeting agendas and guiding discussion. Jordana Heaton indicated an interest in this position.

b) Speaker and Event Coordinators
Deb Hutchison and others have been responsible for this area in the past. There is more than one possible position. Responsibilities would include gathering ideas for upcoming events, arranging speakers and arranging for the provision of appropriate space, materials and refreshments. Deb Hutchison, Karen Munro and Merinda McLure expressed interest in this position. 

c) Website managers
Christina Zeller has been responsible for this position in the past. Responsibilities include maintenance of site and updating minutes, event schedules and links. Tanya Thiessen and Merinda Mclure expressed interest in learning about this position under Christina’s guidance.

d) CLA Liaison
Gordon Coleman has been responsible for these duties in the past, which include maintaining contact with CLA and exploring funding possibilities for the chapter. Jordana Heaton indicated an interest in the position.

e) Tour planners
No individual is responsible for this position currently. Responsibilities include gathering ideas for tours, organizing them and advertising tours to members and other SLAIS students. Stephanie Taggart expressed an interest in the position.

f) Mentoring
A possible position that could be developed to link interested students with librarians in a given field. No names were put forward for the position.

g) Discussion Groups
Anastasia Leonitieva has been responsible for this position in the past. Responsibilities include arranging informal gatherings to discuss relevant topics of interest to members and non-members. Mari Martin indicated that she would be interested in taking up this position in Term 2.

h) Legacy Project
This position would involve the establishment of a project outside of the boundaries of SLAIS, which would continue year after year. No names were put forward for the position.

4.  Ideas for projects and presentations
Merinda McLure suggested a seminar involving speakers with experience in libraries outside of North America. Sylvia Crooks suggested that Rob Roy may be able to provide some ideas as well as others from the BCLA Third World Interest Group.

Stephanie Taggart suggested a tour of the Museum of Anthropology.

Tanya Thiessen indicated an interest in scheduling a lunch-time discussion with Lotsee Patterson to discuss First Nations issues. 

5.  Other business
All future internal discussion will occur on the CLA listserv (subscribe cla-slais end). A contact list was distributed to gather information about new members. The next meeting will be held on Monday, November 6, 12:15-1:15. Meetings will be held approximately once per month on Mondays.
