Meeting re: CLA & BCLA student chapter
From: Friday September 19th & beyond

Attendance: Annie Murray, Anne O'Shea, Tami Setala, Sara Davidson, Lynne Serviss, Margo Schiller

1.   We discussed who is overseeing certain areas of the student chapter.
 Annie Murray  -- CLA rep.
 Anne O'Shea & Tami Setala -- tours
Lynne Serviss & Kelsey Youmans -- mentorship
 May Chan --  treasurer
 Sara Davidson -- secretary
Margo Schiller -- BCLA rep. (elected at the meeting)
Susan Atkey & Kaye Martin --  Webmaster (recruited after the meeting)

2.   We brainstormed for places that we may visit for tours this year.  Possibilities include:
Carnegie, Vancouver Aquarium, CISTI, U. Vic., SFU Live Ref., Strathcona Branch (for Childrens/YA), Britannia, Entertainment Arts Sports (?), Library Processing Centre at UBC, Women and Children's Hospital, and the Courthouse.
There is also a list of tour ideas from last year.  After tours take place, we can submit write-ups of our events to CLA's Feliciter and/or the BCLA Reporter.

3.   We discussed electing a BCLA representative and finding a Webmaster since the website needs updating.

4.    Mentorship was also on the agenda.  We thought a mentorship launch should be planned for late October, early November.  Decisions will have to be made on location, catering etc.  During the second semester, a follow-up event is possible.

5.   Annie noted that she would email the CLA convener (CC administrative staff @ CLA) to see what role SLAIS students could play in the 2004 CLA conference.

6.   We discussed other possible events.  Ideas included: job negotiation workshop, presentation skills (TAG), resume workshop by Elaine Farey (SFU), interview preparation, conflict in the workplace, super session on how to look for a job etc.

7.   Someone also mentioned that Susan Goard said the National Library was available to come to SLAIS.  However, we do not know any particulars.

8.  Lynne Serviss came and said that she and Kelsey had set tentative dates for mentorship events.

9.   We determined a webmaster was needed.  (This position has now been filled.)

10.  We planned a resume workshop for the week of October 27, with Elaine Farey from SFU.

11.   We will plan to have a panel of recent SLAIS graduates to talk about how  they found their first job, scheduled for November 6.

12.  We will try to get someone from HR at VPL to come on November 13 to discuss  opportunities at VPL.

13.  THIS JUST IN - Don Butcher and Madeleine Lefebvre from CLA will be at SLAIS on September 30. (Advertising has already started.)

14.  Margo Schiller is the new BCLA representative.
