BCLA/CLA Student Chapter Minutes

In attendance: Amy Ashmore, Rachel Balko, Fiona Chiu, Leah Hopton, Ali Jones, Shawna Kristin, Sumanjit Manhas, Cyntha Ng, Ellen Wu

Regrets: Naomi Schemm, Qinqin Zhang

1) Approval of Previous Minutes (November 10, 2010).
-Amy motions to approve, Sumanjit seconds.

2) Welcome and Introduction to BCLA/CLA.
-Ali chairs, provides an introduction and welcomes new and old members.

3) Treasurer Report (Cynthia)
-$145 balance.
-Possibility of contributing some money to YAACS salon.
-Cynthia is willing to continue as treasurer until December and would also be happy to step down if someone else wishes to run for the position.

4) BCLA Report (Amy)
-BCLA board meeting took place on March 15.
- The Annual BCLA conference is approaching (April). Volunteer opportunities still available. Student transportation and accommodation arrangements remain a possibility, though little response to e-mails so far.

5) CLA Report / Communications and Website Report (Sumanjit)
-CLA conference taking place at the end of May. Information can be found on CLA website. SLAIS offers a scholarship.
-This year’s list of possible speakers will be made available for next year’s executive.
-Mentorship program information has been updated to indicate that the program is no longer active.  It will now be removed entirely from the website. Pages will be stored in case it is revived at a later date.

6) YAACS Report (Ellen)
-YAACS book discussions have continued to be held approximately once a month, and have been very well-received.
-YAACS will be hosting a job hunting salon at the end of March. All are welcome.
-A silent auction, hosted by YAACS, will be held at the CLA conference to raise money for the Sheila Egoff Award.
-One YAACS Representative position is open for next year, and possibly a second in December.

7) Tour Report (Amy for Qinqin)
-No news.
-Incumbent graduating and position open for next year.

8) Old Business (Sumanjit)
-Year-end review will follow last year’s template. Contributors can add their parts to a GoogleDoc that Cynthia will set up for this purpose.

9) New Business (Sumanjit)
-Several positions coming up for election: BCLA Rep, CLA Rep, Communications and Website Coordinator, Secretary, Tour Coordinator, YAACS Rep.
-Solicitation of expressions of interest.
-BCLA Rep: Fiona Chiu elected (Amy moves, passed unanimously).
-CLA Rep: Shawna Kristin elected (Amy moves, passed unanimously).
-YAACS Rep: Rachel Balko elected (Amy moves, passed unanimously).
-Still open: Communications and Website Coordinator, Secretary, Tour Coordinator. Nominations will be take place in September meeting.

10) Date and time of next meeting
-To be set in September 2011.
-Student chapter on break for the summer.
