Presentation to LIBR 560
• Andrea & Megan will be speaking to the new intake on Saturday January 18.
• Ideas of things to cover: students don’t have to be a member of either BCLA or CLA to participate in the student chapter; mentorship program; the first year of BCLA membership is free to students; BCLA conference in May; BCLA job website & listserv; etc.

Children’s Programming Workshops
• Lorna Mackie has spoken to Terry Eastwood on this matter
• SLAIS has committed to providing at least two 3-hour workshops on children’s programming: one workshop each by Jane Cobb (babies) and Alison Haupt (toddlers & puppetry)
• It was decided that students would prefer the workshops to be held on separate days rather than one long day of 6 hours
• The workshops will not be held before March 15 (but we’re not sure why)
• Lorna is going to report the students’ input to Terry
• Paul Evans will consult with Lorna on these and possibly other Children’s Programming workshops

International Librarianship Event
• It was decided that an afternoon event would be better attended than an evening one
• Andrea & Megan will post messages to the CLA and BCLA listservs asking to solicit volunteer speakers
• It would be a good idea to offer childcare: Paul suggested that perhaps members of the storytelling group would volunteer to entertain the children
• The exact date is yet to be determined, but we are hoping for late February

Professional Experience “Panel”
• Many students are not aware of the option to do a Professional Experience project for credit
• An idea is to gather some of the students together who have completed a Professional Experience, and they can each informally present on their experience to a group of interested students
• Jan Turner (Professional Experience person @ SLAIS) could also be there
• Reiko & Andrea volunteered to look into planning this
• It could be a lunchtime event – however, a date has not been set

Guest Speakers
• Mark Bodnar & Sally Taylor on Advocacy in Academic Libraries
Mark & Sally could talk about the recent ALPS (Academic Libraries in Public Service –
section of BCLA) meeting which focused on how to forge and maintain effective
relationships with faculty & students as an academic librarian
Concerns were raised that attendance would be sparse and that there would not be
enough time to put this together
• Mary Ann Epp on Services for the Disabled
Patricia mentioned that Mary Ann is keen to come as a speaker on this issue
Again, concerns were raised about student interest
It was suggested that Mary Ann would be a good speaker for the Adult Services course
  being offered in the summer

• Carol Naylor on Career Skills: cover letters, resumés, interviewing skills & portfolios
Richard Hopkins has already contacted Carol and planned a series of workshops
Andrea & Megan have met with him to see if he needs help coordinating and advertising
It was suggested that the workshops be done in February and be planned for lunch hours
Richard will get back to Andrea or Megan when he has confirmed which times are best for
  Carol

Mentorship Program
• The next event is to be held on February 13 at noon
• It will be an informal gathering for students to get together and chat about their mentors & experiences, etc.
• The Chapter will provide money for snacks
• Suzanne has been contacted by students at the U of T library school who want to learn how to set up a similar program – congratulations to Suzanne & Colleen on becoming ‘nationally recognized’!!

Library Tours
• Lee Anne is working on setting up a tour of SFU Live Chat Reference
• It was decided that the best time for a tour would be February 27 from 9:30 until noon

• It was mentioned that students would like to tour Campus Libraries
• Students might also like to know about GAA positions in Campus Libraries
• Kate offered to create a map of the campus libraries with a GAA contact for each library
• This can be posted on the bulletin board in the lounge for students to refer to

Website
• Andrea will talk to Reiko and Alex to see if they have time to update the website

Next Meeting: Friday January 31st at noon
