1) Approval of
Previous Minutes (September 15, 2010).
-Amy motions to approve, Sumanjit seconds.
2) Welcome
and Introduction to BCLA/CLA.
-Sumanjit chairs, provides an introduction and welcomes new and old members.
3) BCLA Report (Amy)
-Reminder of BCLA conference and opportunities for students to volunteer. Keynote speaker at conference: Paul Whitney.
4) CLA Report / Communications
and Website Report (Sumanjit) -Summary
of recent CLA teleconference: ‘President’s Talk’ still under
discussion, no date set; possibility of devoting a section of the CLA
website to communication between CLA student chapters. -October 15:
Deadline for applying to serve as a student member on Re:Generations
Committee in CACUL (Canadian Association of College and University
Libraries) -October 28, Vancouver: CLA talk: ‘Finding the Sweet
Spots: The Value-Added Special Library’ -October 30, Vancouver: CLA
talk: ‘Career Planning at Any Stage’
5) ALPS Report (Naomi) -November 2, 11.30 a.m.-1.00 p.m.: Speaker panel. ‘Getting Hired in Higher Education’, Dodson Room, IKBLC
6) YAACS Report (Sumanjit for Sara and Ellen)
-First book club meeting a big success. Next one will be near end of October.
7) Treasurer Report (Cynthia) -Exact funds uncertain due to LASSA treasurer turnover difficulties. Estimated $120 available, +/-$50.
8) Tour Report (Qinqin)
-Qinqin is now tour coordinator. -Will
begin with a local tour to attract interest among new
students. Possible locations: Asian Library, Rare Books &
Special Collections, Vancouver Community College, Vancouver School of
Theology
9) Old Business
-Mentorship co-ordinator position still vacant. However, BCLA may take on the program. -Cookbook
fundraiser update (on behalf of Terra Marco): Estimates for 50 copies,
spiral-bound, black & white, coloured cardstock covers, 30
double-sided pages: Copies Plus (best deal): $3.75/book, Copiesmart
Copy Centre: $5.28/book, Staples: $6/book. Cookbook theme: provide a
book suggestion to go with each recipe. Leah Hopton will send out an
e-mail to solicit recipes and gauge interest from stuent body. -On bringing in a guest speaker: Susan Patterson is a possible speaker for government librarianship topics.
10) New Business (Sumanjit) -Michelle
Mallette & Debra Lock attempting to improve communication between
department and student groups. Meeting next week to discuss.
Solicitation for ideas. Suggestions: a single coordinated calendar
and more collaborative events. 11) Date
