BCLA/CLA Student Chapter Minutes

Present: Shannon Ozirny (YAACS), Alice Darnton (Tour Coordinator), Anna Krangle-Long, Jade Fraser (Mentorship Coordinator), Roen Janyk (BCLA Representative), Amy Ashmore, Heidi Schiller, Bailey Durs, Naomi Eisenstat, Erika Jelinek, Sara Hathaway, Bea Pires, Sumanjit Manhas, Carly Pansulla, Erin Hollingsworth, Cynthia Ng, Tara Stieglitz (Communications and ALPS Representative), Corene Maret Brown, Jeannine Stickle (CLA Representative), Alyssa Green (Mentorship Coordinator) and Annie Lou-Bear

1. Old Business: Previous meeting minutes (March 30th) and agenda (September 15th) approved.

2. Elections: Cynthia Ng elected as Treasurer and Corene Maret Brown elected as Secretary. Members at large were not elected but interested parties were encouraged to contact Tara by e-mail to have their names added to the website.

3. CLA Report: Jeannine reported on the upcoming visit of CLA President John Teskey to SLAIS on October 15th. $50 was approved to spend on refreshments and gifts for speakers. It was also approved to hold a raffle for interested parties to win a lunch with President Teskey.

4. BCLA Report: Roen reported on the April meeting of the BCLA and the July board meeting. Discussed were the cuts to the provincial library grants which were reduced due to the activities of committed patrons and librarians. The Union of BC Municipalities was mentioned as needing volunteers for their conference.

5. Communications and Website Report: Tara reported that the website will be updated with the revised executive. Members are encouraged to sign up for the list-serv.

6. Treasure Report: Cynthia was given the treasurer’s binder from past treasurer, Beth Cote.

7. Mentorship Report: Alyssa reported that she was in the process of contacting professional mentors while Jane and Annie were matching mentors with mentees. Mentors in second-year will be offered to first year students, as well as professional mentors.

8. Tour Report: Alice reported on last years tours and opened the floor for suggestions for this year’s tours. Four tours will be given this year.

9. ALPS Report: Tara reported that the December meeting will be held at the University of the Fraser Valley. The topic will be Sustainability in the Library or the Greening of Libraries. A panel of 4-5 academic librarians will be held in October on the topic of “Getting Hired in Higher Education.”

10. YAACS: Shannon reported that the book salon event held in August had potential to be a regular event. A YAACS book club was also suggested. A list of potentially interested students was circulated.

11. LASSA: Jeannine presented the current discussion between BCLA and LASSA as to whether the BCLA student chapter wished to become a separate club under the AMS. The motion of whether BCLA should become a separate entity from LASSA was voted upon and defeated.

12. Bake Sale: Profits from last year’s bake sale were recorded as $47 profit for the club.

13. BCLA Browser: Members were encouraged to submit articles for the journal and BCLA student chapter club events. It was approved that any individual in charge of an event will submit the article to the BCLA Browser.

14. Memberships: Members were encouraged to join BCLA as it is free for students. An e-mail will be sent out to all SLAIS students to join BCLA.

15. Future Meetings: It was approved that chairing of future BCLA meetings will be chaired on a rotating schedule. Roen will chair the next meeting and book the room.

16. Next meeting: October 20th at 11:00. Room TBA.
