  3. CLA Report

    Krista's Report on CACUL:
CACUL: CACUL is a division of CLA for Academic librarians
(http://www.cla.ca/divisions/cacul/). Krista is a member of a CACUL committee called Re:Generations. They will be holding a teleconference soon. Activities include mentorships and workshops. They also have a blog (http://www.cla.ca/divisions/cacul/regenerations/index.htm). Krista will have more to report after the meeting on Oct. 29. She may be looking for student bloggers.

    Stephen's CLA Report (via email):
Dr. Schrader's Visit: The visit of CLA President, Alvin to SLAIS on Oct 5th was a success! Many thanks to Jennifer Dixey for her poster and promotion efforts. We had about 15 people attend, including professors Edie Rasmussen, Luanne Freund and Rajesh Singh. Every student left with a door prize and a CLA booklet, compliments of the CLA. Student Wayne Altenberg won the free One Year CLA Membership. I have many CLA folders for other students who may wish to have one, or to hand out at events or orientation. Dr. Schrader spoke at length about the CLA and specifically about its relation to students and emerging new IS professionals. Part of his talk reflected on his own intriguing research into School to Work Transitions and key differences between the two. In Dr. Schrader we have a great supporter of students and new professionals. Of particular import, he spoke about the CLA conference and how students can get involved (more on that to follow next term).

CLA Conference: Given that the CLA Annual Conference will be taking place in Vancouver (21-24 May 2008) http://www.cla.ca/conference/2008/index.htm both the CLA and SLAIS are wanting to participate in getting SLAIS students there. And like the BCLA conference, which has many more students attend/volunteer since it is local, having the CLA in Vancouver (2008) instead of in Newfoundland (2007) is a bonus for our students.

Student Essay Contest: In addition to forthcoming CLA efforts to promote the Conference and CLA to students, there is a CLA Student Essay Contest http://www.cla.ca/awards/student.htm which provides the winner free attendance/transportation to the Conference. There are also other various group initiatives to promote student attendance and to involve students and CLA Chapter members who are attending the Conference (more on that to follow next term). Remember that MS Access conference-creation assignment in Susie's LIBR 500? In 2004, a SLAIS student played a key role in organizing registrations for the 2004 joint BCLA/CLA conference in Victoria. There should be lots of opportunities for SLAIS students to get involved.

CLA Conference Volunteers: CLA will likely be looking for volunteers in December

  4. BCLA Report (Shannon's Report via email)
    • Website: The BCLA website has had a bit of a facelift. Check it out: http://www.bcla.bc.ca. In particular, you will want to see the Partnership Job Board that BCLA is hosting on behalf of the Provincial and Territorial Library Associations of Canada, as the site now includes job postings from across the country. You can access the website through BCLA, or by visiting: http://www.libraryjobs.ca
    • Membership: A call for new and renewing BCLA memberships was sent out by Jennifer with the notice for our October 18th meeting. Hopefully, BCLA will get a few more memberships from SLAIS as a result. I am keeping Virginia Charron, BCLA's Membership Secretary, up to date on any membership calls we put out at SLAIS.
    • Visit by BCLA Executive Director: I have contacted the BCLA Office to find out when the Executive Director will be visiting core students this term, as I'm hoping to be able to attend the visit to LIBR 501 with him. I have yet to hear back about the date of the visit.
    • Pub Night: A BCLA-sponsored pub night is scheduled for Thursday, November 15th, 6-9pm at The Morrissey (1227 Granville Street). The pub night will be a great opportunity for members (or those considering becoming members) to socialize, network, and find out more about BCLA and the association's various committees. BCLA may pay for some food and drinks for this event, although the details are still being worked out and I will pass them along to the Student Chapter and student body as I receive them. There will be icebreakers and door prizes too, so be sure to mark your calendars for this event. I announced the pub night at the screening of the Hollywood Librarian on Thursday, October 4th.
    • Jeanine Fuller: Jeanine Fuller, the Manager of Little Sister's Bookstore, has confirmed that she is able to speak as part of the SLAIS colloquia series during Freedom to Read Week. She is scheduled to speak on Wednesday, February 27th between 12:15-1:15pm. I will communicate with Leanne Freund and Francesca Marini to see if our Student Chapter and/or the BCLA Intellectual Freedom Committee can introduce Jeanine.
    • IFC: For discussion: The Intellectual Freedom Committee is making arrangements for a gift to be purchased in honour of Ann Curry's work in this area. I'm not sure if this is a "secret" gift, but I'm wondering if anyone feels that we should solicit a donation from SLAIS for this gift or put out the word to students that they can contribute financially to this gift. It is my understanding that most IFC members are contributing about $10 each.
      - It was decided that no donation would be made from BCLA, or by soliciting SLAIS students as the gift is not connected to Dr. Curry's teaching, but rather with her work on the IFC. Instead students are recommended to contribute on their own or through cards.

  5. Communications (Jennifer's Report via email)
    • Publicity: We have been publicizing meetings and events via email, and a poster was made for Dr. Schrader's visit.
    • Poster: Would like to make a poster to publicize the new BCLA website -- it's much improved. It would go up on the BCLA bulletin board.
    • Exec Bios and Pictures: I still need new bios and photos for everyone on the exec. Can everyone please send me a photo from home, something casual and fun? For the bio, I just need your cohort year, your program, and any other personal details you'd like to share.
      - A deadline of Oct. 31 was set.
    • ALPS: For the ALPS panel on November 6th: I am the only ALPS exec member who is able to be at the panel. So, I would like to request two volunteers from among the exec, one to be an "outside" helper, greeting the panelists at the door of TEF to let them into the building and up to the 3rd floor, and one to be an "inside" helper for the panel itself. It would be a great chance to meet some working academic librarians and help formulate questions for the panel! If you'd like to take on either of these volunteer duties please email me by the end of the day Tuesday, October 23rd.
      - Jodi and Dana will help out at the event.
    • Google Calendar: Would like to encourage everyone to use the Google Calendar for the group to post events well ahead of time. I use Google Calendar to track my own appointments, and the BCLA events appear on it as well. That way I can make promotional posters more in advance of events.

  6. Treasurer Report (Emily's report via email)
    • Emily has emailed Mary Grenier twice since our last meeting regarding the $200 that SLAIS still owes us, and have not heard back from her yet. She will try one more time, and then will have to try to track her down in person.

  7. Mentorship Report (Andrea & Dana)
    • Terry Eastwood (faculty liason) retired. Sent Edie an email in Sept about Mentorship but no response yet. Dana will talk to her in class.
    • We are consistently using gmail accounts now.
    • Also set up a wiki and communicating that way.
    • Process of setting people up with mentors is ongoing. Still looking for more mentors.
    • Sarah and Maria in database design are going to set up a mentorship database for us (LIBR 554). Andrea told them all our needs.
    • Also looking into photocopying costs - who pays for it? The students or the student group?

  8. Website Report (Jodi)
    • Site has been updated and includes events.
    • Added in visit with CLA president.
    • Maybe need a procedure for when to add something up there. Lots of discussion before something put there.
    • Jodi will post BCLA and CLA conferences.

  9. Old Business
    • Departmental Club Application
      • LASSA will be calling an all-club meeting to discuss.

  10. New Business
    • BCLA conference next year - student presentation/sponsor an event:
      • The head of programming is open to student suggestions for programming. Deadline is Fri. Oct. 26. Maybe send an email out to people. They don't have to put together a whole program, but if they are interested in a speaker and would like to try and lure them here.
We will send an email encouraging students to submit: Respond directly to BCLA.
        - Jodi will email Jennifer about the procedure.

  11. Date of Next Meeting:
    • Will be set up over email.
    • Events book needs to be checked.
    • Maybe Nov. 13.
