BCLA/CLA Student Chapter Minutes

Present: Martha González Palacios, Natalie Catto, Monica Chattaway, Pippa Rogers, Tara Williston, Stephen Warren, Manami Saito.

  1. Approval of Last Meeting’s Minutes– minutes approved by all members present
  2. Approval of agenda - agenda approved by all members present
  3. CLA Report—Stephen
    1. CLA meeting was re-scheduled again due to accreditation process. CLA president has contacted us with the following dates for a possible future visit: Jan 11, 12, 15, 18, 26, 29, 30. To confer with Edie Rasmussen about the availability.
  4. BCLA Report—Natalie
    1. At the board meeting strategic plans were discussed in regards to continuing education, membership and government.  Timeline for action was drawn up.
    2. Arts co-op program would like to begin awarding a $1000 scholarship to a MLIS and MAS SLAIS student. Will review current awards and it will be discussed in further detail at the next meeting.
    3. ALPS meeting in Nanaimo on Dec 8th.  The theme this year is space design in virtual and physical libraries.  Jennifer to send an e-mail out to the listserv inviting students to come to this event.  Please also send an e-mail to Martha so she can put it on the  SLAIS website.
    4. ALPS event also scheduled on Oct 19th- “Getting hired in higher education”- grads to come and talk about how they got their jobs at academic libraries.
  5. Treasurer’s Report—Pipa
    1. $145.00 left in account
    2. We should be receiving the annual $100 in the next to weeks.
    3. Still waiting for $200 to be reimbursed to us.  The check was made out to BCLA not LASSA so there is a delay in getting the money.
    4. Possibly a bakesale at Christmas to raise money.
  6. Communications Report — Jennifer
    1. Pictures of execs have been taken and are to be sent to Jennifer to mount on bulletin board.
  7. Website Report — Martha
    1. Nothing to report
  8. Mentorship Report - Monica
    1. Mentorship party, Yaletown Brewery, Oct 15, 5:30pm.Monica to send another reminder e-mail out to listserv about event tomorrow. Reservations made for but will be cut down to 20. Reservation under “Mentorship” or “Chattaway”.
  9. New Business
    1. Job fair next March- Natalie and Manami to volunteer to be on committee.
    2. BCLA/CLA bulletin board in Lab 1- photos taken of execs.  Please write a brief bio (name, program, starting date (or expected grad date?), what we do for BCLA/CLA, if we work for a library, with one personal detail or two like undergrad, where we're from, family, hobbies, etc) and send to Jennifer.
    3. Western Washington Visit- 10 students wanting to come on Nov 23rd for a daytrip from Bellingham.  Natalie to check with Edie about availability of faculty members.  Tara to check and see if a combined VPL tour for SLAIS students could be arranged for that day and the visitors could come along. BCLA/CLA members could give them a walking tour of campus and could provide a snack or lunch.
