BCLA/CLA Student Chapter Meeting

Present:   Caitlin Fralick, Todd Rowlatt, Pippa Rogers, Tara Stephens, Alicia Jinkerson,  Manami Saito, Martha González

1.  CLA Report (Caitlin)

·  Upcoming CAPL event- Will be organized over Christmas

·  CLA Membership Cost Survey

o We received 20 responses

o Results will be compiled over the  holidays

 

2.  BCLA Report (Tara)

·  ALPS December Meeting

o ALPS December 2nd meeting  “Future of Reference”- not a strong turn-out but it was a bad time of year.

o Tara will be able to attend ALPS meeting next term.

o If anyone has any information or suggestions for future ALPS meetings please let Tara know

·   Freedom to Read Week in Feb

o Heather DeForest potential speaker

o Will have to liase with Joe Tennis to finalize speakers

·  Pub Night

o Caitlin met with Christina Zeller (SLA) and got her business card- possible connections for more Special Library mentors

 

3.    Mentorship Report (Alicia)

·  We are sad to see Alicia leave.  Linda will be taking over her position

·  Planning a January mentorship party, once match-ups are complete

 

4.    Treasurer Report (Todd)

·  2 checks have been made out to reimburse on Tara and Caitlin

·  Still waiting for the $200 check from SLAIS.  Todd to ask Mary about it

·  Working on getting a current account balance

·  We are hoping BCLA event will be partially funded.

 

5.    Communication Report (Tara for Emily)

·  limit of 2 MLIS e-mails for events

·  1st ail 2 wks prior to event and 2nd e-mail the day before event

·  Emily would like to talk to us at the beg of next term about all events next term and discuss what we need for advertisement (posters, etc

 

6.    Job Fair Committee Report (Todd)

·  To take place Friday, March 3- 9:00-4:00pm

·  We are trying to get Lynn Copeland (SFU) as keynote speaker

·  6 people on panels (professional people to do talk about getting jobs)

·  Topics for panels include

o Alternate ways to get jobs

o What do I do now?

o Self-promotion on the job search and on job

·  Contacting people to do workshops- in process of finalizing speakers

·  AMS funding would help ($600)

·  Budget to be about $1100 but is cut-able if funding doesn’t go through

·  Survey was responded by 30 people

 

7.  New Member Recruitment (Caitlin)

·  Hope Power is taking on the position of Tour Coordinator

·  We have to be spreading the word that positions are open and be active in recruiting new members

 

8.    January Orientation (Caitlin)

·  Very similar to last term but not visiting 560 classes. Only speaking at orientation.

·  Tara, Caitlin to attend to speak, anyone else is welcome to attend.

 

9. Other business

·  Caitlin to chair next meeting

·  Date not set- please e-mail Tara about what lunch hours are free for you next term for meetings.
