Conference Support for SLAIS Students
Conference attendance is an important part of professional
and academic life. It offers the opportunity to hear about new research
and practice and generates new ideas and inspiration. It is also
a great way to meet others who share your professional and research
interests. There are many conferences worth attending, from the
graduate student research conferences held at UBC to local, national
and international conferences of organizations such as the Canadian
Library Association (CLA), Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA),
American Society for Information Science & Technology
(ASIS&T), Association for Library and Information Science
Education (ALISE) and Children’s Literature Association
(ChLA).
In support of conference attendance, every year SLAIS provides financial assistance to a student in each of its programs (MAS, MLIS, MA(CL)and PhD) under the following programs:
Student to CLA (MLIS or Joint Student)
At the request of CLA,
every year SLAIS nominates a student as part of the “Student
to CLA” program. The nominated
student acts as a volunteer at the conference in return for registration
and shared accommodation. SLAIS provides a travel stipend of up
to $500. Calls for nominations typically appear a few months before
the conference, and are circulated to the student list-serv. A
faculty committee selects the nominee from applications submitted
to the Director.
Student to ACA (MAS or Joint Student)
In recent years ACA has included a student paper session and MAS
faculty have been asked to nominate a student to present a paper
in that session. When the request is received, interested students
are invited via the student list-serv to submit papers for consideration.
A faculty committee selects the paper to be submitted on the basis
of its suitability for oral presentation, originality, and contribution
to thinking about archival matters. The ACA does not provide support
for students to attend the conference, but students are able to
register for the conference at a reduced rate. SLAIS will provide
a travel stipend of up to $500.
MA(CL) Student Conference Support
Travel
support to a total of $500 will be made available in an academic

are presenting a paper or poster, or contributing to conference
organization. The availability of travel funds will be announced
in early September with a deadline for application, via letter
to the Director, by October 15.
PhD Student Conference Support
