RICHARD HOPKINS BIDS FAREWELL TO SLAIS

Dr. Richard Hopkins received his B.Ed., B.L.S., M.L.S. and M.A. (English) degrees from the University of B.C. and his Ph.D. in Library Science from the University of Toronto in 1988. A library practitioner for eight years, Dr. Hopkins worked in all of the major types of libraries: school, university, special, public and college. He also worked in “entrepreneurial librarian” mode, supporting his doctoral studies as a freelance librarian while living in Toronto. In 1983 Dr. Hopkins joined UBC’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies as an Assistant Professor, bringing his wealth of practical experience to courses in general reference, science, humanities and social sciences reference, research methods, and management.

As the SLAIS Admissions Coordinator for four years, Dr. Hopkins also helped to shape the MAS, MLIS, Joint MAS/MLIS and MA(CL) programs through his selection of highly qualified students for these programs. Through his role in the creation of the SLAIS Co-Op program, and his liaison with local area employers, he assisted students in finding part-time jobs to support their studies and started them on their career path after graduation.

Inside and outside the classroom, Dr. Hopkins focused his attention on fundamental issues in library and information studies related to the availability of information. His concern about the growing gap in our society, and indeed in the world, between the “information rich” and the “information poor” has led him to explore the vital role that libraries can play in reducing or mitigating this serious social inequity. Dr. Hopkins is currently working with Dr. Yosef Wosk of Simon Fraser University to manage and maintain a foundation entitled “Assistance to Libraries” that will identify and fund worthwhile library projects in Canada and in developing countries.

Dr. Hopkins’ interest in the free flow of information is also demonstrated in his service to the profession. He is vice-president of the B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Association and has served on three committees of the B.C. Library Association: Copyright, Information Policy and Government Publications.

Above all, Dr. Hopkins is known for his passion for the printed book. He is the editor of Amphora, the quarterly journal of The Alcuin Society, which publishes articles on the history of the book, the book arts, private presses, book design, publishing, bookselling, book collecting, rare books and special collections and reading. An inveterate collector of modern first editions, Dr. Hopkins is often to be found at book readings and signings, and he will continue to pursue this interest in his retirement.

In honour of Dr. Hopkins’ retirement, a group of colleagues and students decided to establish a new award within the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies to recognize the commitment that Dr. Hopkins has made in the field. The Richard Hopkins Award will recognize a graduating student in a master’s program in SLAIS who demonstrates leadership and integrity, balancing academic achievement with a demonstrated commitment to their chosen area.
