WISE COURSES FOR 2011 SUMMER SESSION [May-AUgust 2011]
- Please remember than only 3-5 spaces in total are available in each course for WISE students in the participating institutions. There is no guarantee that there will be space for you in any of these courses.
- You should NOT request a space in a WISE course unless you are reasonably sure you will actually take the course. It causes logistical problems to "take up" a space then drop the course at the last minute.
- All courses have the four MLIS Core Courses as required pre-requisites: LIBR 500, LIBR 501, LIBR 502 & LIBR 503 for students in the MLIS and Dual programs. Students in the stand-alone MAS program must have completed the eight MAS Core Courses. Other required pre-requisites are noted in the individual course descriptions. If you are in the MAS program you should ask Mary Sue Stephenson [MLIS Chair] about whether or not you have taken the relevant equivalent courses in the MAS program.
- All SLAIS students are eligible to take relevant WISE courses. MAS students - see below for information on taking a WISE course. MACL, CAS and Ph.D. students should consult with their advisers before requesting spaces in WISE courses.
- Students who wish to take one of the available courses will be registered in LIBR 593: Seminar
- Students may take a maximum of two WISE courses [6 credits] as part of their SLAIS program
- Student must agree to the course parameters of the host institution including course management tools, grading, and dates of term
- Student must have access to technology necessary for completion of course
- Student must have the technical knowledge to complete course successfully
- Marks given by the program offering the course will be converted to UBC marks using only the WISE Marking Matrix. Please read over this document carefully as it will be the sole source used to convert marks from WISE institutions to UBC marks.
- To request a space in one or more of the WISE courses please follow the registration instructions distributed to all SLAIS students via email no earlier than March 5, 2011

WISE web site, please send Mary Sue Stephenson
a separate e-mail [mss@interchange.ubc.ca]
for each course giving this information:
- Your name
- Your program [MLIS, Dual MAS/MLIS, MAS]
- Your UBC student number
- The name, number, and institution of the course you
wish to take
- IMPORTANT-
If you are in the stand-alone MAS - before we can send approval to WISE for you to take a course you must have first completed and submitted
the "Application for Credit for External' Courses Form": http://www.slais.ubc.ca/resources/students/RequestExternalCourses.pdf
It must also be signed by your MAS adviser as well as Rick Kopak as SLAIS Graduate Adviser before the WISE registration process can take place.
When you send your request to take a class to Mary Sue Stephenson please indicate that the form has already been submitted and approved. If you forget to tell her or you haven't completed the approval process it will delay the process of trying to secure a seat for you in one of the WISE courses. Given the small number of seats, it will likely keep you from obtaining one of the seats.
- VERY IMPORTANT: When you take a WISE course you are registered in a SLAIS/UBC course: LIBR 593D or LIBR 593E and all the normal add/drop dates at UBC apply. All courses will be in the UBC system as full summer courses [May-August]. This means the withdrawal deadlines given below apply even if the final date for withdrawal is BEFORE the WISE course actually begins. You are held responsible for dropping ALL relevant courses by the UBC deadlines. If you forget to drop [even if the WISE course has not yet started] you will receive a mark of "F" in the course.

- Cultural Heritage [cannot be taken by students in the stand-alone MAS or Dual programs]
- Description: This course is designed to educate students on the vital role that archives and records play in the cultural heritage fields. Examines the application of various archival theories and practices in cultural heritage, cultivates a better appreciation of cultural groups represented by the cultural heritage industries, and analyzes the various ethical stances surrounding their cultural property, cultural traditions, art, and other memory devices and institutions.

- Electronic Health Records: Emerging Standards, Applications, and Services
- Description: The course is aimed at data management specialists, data management administrators, and students interested in health data management. There is currently significant momentum for selecting and using EHRs, driven by the financial incentives specified in the American Recovery and Reinvestment bill which became US law in 2009. The Office of National Coordinator of Health Information Technology is assembling use cases in various areas of health including pediatric care, long-term chronic care, adverse event reporting, and medications. Alongside consumer-oriented support services, there is also a significant effort on developing state-level health information exchanges and a federal architecture for health information exchange.

- Feminism, Librarianship and Information [please note that this course CANNOT be taken by any students completing their degree requirements in summer 2011. We would not receive the marks in time to keep graduating students from having to pay a September UBC tuition installment]
- Description: Examines the nature of librarianship as a profession, issues related to information, and practices of information services from gendered perspectives using applicable feminist theoretical interpretations. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course a student will better understand the gendered construction: *of librarianship as a profession, *of the philosophy and practices of library and information work, and *of information as a global entity. S/he will also be able to apply feminist theoretical concepts to information use and service.

- Museum Archives
- Students in the Dual program are eligible to take this course if they have completed the MAS Core -- it is not necessary to have also completed the MLIS Core.
- Description: Overview of the evolution of the purposes of museums; history and development of museum record-keeping systems, with particular emphasis on changes in those systems in transition from paper-based to electronic records, use of functional analysis to identify principle functions of museums and to guide the appraisal of records that document those functions.

- Description: Detailed examination of the bibliographic control of music materials (scores, sound recordings, videorecordings) and their inherent bibliographic characteristics. Special problems in the application of standard methods for descriptive cataloging, authority control, subject analysis and classification of music materials. - Web Development and Information Architecture
- Description: Organizing and structuring content to help individuals, communities, and organizations find and manage internal and external Web-based resources and services. Application of current coding, metadata, and style standards to create Web documents. Evaluation of Web site quality and usability, and assessment of resource discovery tools. Strategic planning and user needs analysis for information architecture. Content inventory, organization, and management in support of wayfinding and navigation. Design documents for prototyping large Web sites. Readings, essays, design projects. Students will communicate with the instructor and each other via real-time conversations using Skype software and a class wiki.
