Course Goal:

The goal of this course is to prepare professional librarians and archivists to work effectively within a larger organization, understand and demonstrate leadership, and to assume managerial responsibilities within their unit.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • define specific terms used in business management and library and archival management;
  • explain concepts used in business management and library and archival management;
  • conduct a successful literature search, including print, electronic and internet resources, in the area of business, library and archival management;
  • identify their personal style and understand how they affect and influence others
  • work successfully both in a collaborative way and in an individual way in a work team environment
  • demonstrate problem solving skills
  • make an effective business presentation

Prerequisites and/or Course Restrictions: LIBR 500, LIBR 510, LIBR 560 (for students in the MLIS program); ARST 510, ARST 515, ARST 516, ARST 520, ARST 530 & ARST 593B (for students in MAS program)

Limited to students in the MLIS and MAS programs unless permission granted by SLAIS Graduate Advisor.

Format of the course: Class meets on Monday evenings. Class sessions will be a combination of lectures, discussions, student presentations, and in-class work.

Readings:

There is no required textbook for the course. Readings will be identified by both the instructor and the students. Library and Information Center Management (5 th or 6 th editions) by Robert Stueart and Barbara Moran provides an overview and is recommended.

Attendance: The calendar states: “Regular attendance is expected of students in all their classes (including lectures, laboratories, tutorials, seminars, etc.). Students who neglect their academic work and assignments may be excluded from the final examinations. Students who are unavoidably absent because of illness or disability should report to their instructors on return to classes.”

Evaluation: All assignments will be awarded letter grades using the evaluative criteria given on the SLAIS web site.

Written & Spoken English Requirement: Written and spoken work may receive a lower mark if it is, in the opinion of the instructor, deficient in English.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Suspected cases will be reported to the appropriate authorities.
