Course Schedule Week by Week:

The week by week schedule will be developed at the first class on January 9th and issued to you at the second class.

Attendance:

The calendar states: “Regular attendance is expected of students in all their classes (including lectures, laboratories, tutorials, seminars, etc.). Students who neglect their academic work and assignments may be excluded from the final examinations. Students who are unavoidably absent because of illness or disability should report to their instructors on return to classes.”

Evaluation: presentations and leadership of the seminars (80) and class participation (20%)

ASSIGNMENT: CLASS PRESENTATION (40% each)

You will lead two seminar sessions by summarizing the topic you have chosen for the class. You should not read a paper on the subject; rather you should provide insight into the topic, the issues it raises of wider significance beyond the immediate realm under study, and any particular issues or differences of opinion discovered in the relevant literature. It is also recommended that you identify a number of questions to pose to the class for discussion, as the whole purpose of the summary is to stimulate class discussion.

You must make a Power Point Presentation (and give students a copy of it) or issue a handout to students to help them understand the opening summary. Your presentation should take about 20 minutes. The grade will be based on the quality of the oral presentation and on the quality of handout.

It is also the responsibility of the student, in collaboration with the instructor, to select a number of readings, normally totaling 40-50 pages from relevant sources, for everyone in the class to read. Please provide the instructor with a photocopy of the readings at least eightdays in advance of the date of the seminar you are leading. The instructor will make copies for everyone in the class and distribute them at the class one week before your presentation.

SOME SUGGESTED TOPICS :

1. The development of a system of archives in a particular country

For this topic, you could look at the origins of archival activity in the country, the kinds of archival repositories and institutions that have been established, the role of government policy in developing a system of archives, national programs that have been developed in the archival arena to assist archives or users of archives. You will also want to look to see if there are archival traditions distinctive to the country, including traditions in the formation or education of archivists. Finally, you might want to look at the role of professional or other organizations.

2. The origins and development of the national archival institution (or other prominent archival institution) and the role it has played to stimulate the wider archival endeavour in the country.

For this topic, for some institutions, you might want to limit your study to a particular time frame. For instance, a good topic would be the origins and early development of the Public Record Office of the United Kingdom, or the struggle to establish the National Archives of the United States and its early development. In either case you would be looking to characterize how it developed. You should pay particular attention to the evolution of its mandate and functions it, the particular approach it took to fulfilling its mandate, and the main obstacles it faced and successes it had. Before embarking on a topic in this sphere, you should assure yourself that you have access to adequate sources.

3.The development of archival education and the archival profession in a country.

For this topic, you can examine where education has been placed over time and what was studied. You can also look at the role of professional associations and other bodies who set standards for education or administer certification of archivists. It would also be appropriate to examine the literature on education and professional development, and look at efforts at continuing education.

4.Systematizing an aspect of archival work or archival theory in a particular country

For this topic, you could look, for example, at the tradition of arrangement and description or appraisal, or how the country attempted to provide information about archival holdings to researchers on a national scale. There is plenty of room for invention in this realm.

5.You could also look at the development of a class of archives in a particular country (or compare such development in more than one country), such as business archives, university archives, historical societies work to preserve archives (such as in the United States), or religious archives.

For this topic, you want to assure yourself that there are sufficient sources, and be sure to discuss your ideas about the topic with the instructor.

 6. Archival networks

For this topic, you would investigate efforts to develop networks of archives for some purpose. For example, you might look at the various councils of archives and development of the Canadian Archival Information Network (CAIN) in Canada, or the National Register in the U.K. There has not been much of this kind of activity in the world, and not a lot has been written about it in the periodical literature, so you have to assure yourself that you can find enough information to tell the story.

You may discuss other ideas for a topic with the instructor.
