LIBR 559F: INTRODUCTION TO WEB PAGE DESIGN USING DREAMWEAVER MX 2004

WINTER SESSION 2005-2006, Term 2

School of Library, Archival and Information Studies

The University of British Columbia

COURSE ASSIGNMENT

Create an Electronic Portfolio

Assignment is due: March 17, 2006by noon. It must be placed in your personal SLAIS FTP folder in a folder using the FirstInitial_LastName format for the folder name – I’ll retrieve it from there.

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the Dreamweaver skills you learn in this course, in combination with the basic web design skills and knowledge you have gained in other courses [such as LIBR 500 or ARST 593B].

General instructions for Your Portfolio:
You should try and demonstrate the skills that you have learned in this class as much as you can in a creative manner. As long as you meet the basic minimum criteria listed below you should feel free to construct your portfolio as you wish. All portfolios will be mounted on the LIBR 559F course page unless you request that your portfolio not be publicly posted. If you wish your portfolio can also be mounted on the SLAIS Student Resumes page: http://www.slais.ubc.ca/PEOPLE/students/resumes.htm

General Criteria:

  • The portfolio should be for you rather than someone else
  • All pages should follow the basic principles of web design that you have already learned in LIBR 500, ARST 593B and other courses

Specific Requirements:

  • The Portfolio must contain at least 4 pages:
    • No file or folder names can contain ANY spaces.
    • Home page or splash page MUST have the file name index.htm
    • Other pages could include [for example]:
      • Resume [could be more than one file/page and could incorporate some of the items listed below -- If you wish you can also create and link alternative versions of the resume -- such as a Word and/or PDF version -- these pages don't count in the minimum total number of page requirements given above]
      • Courses
      • Projects
      • Hobbies and/or personal activities/interests [can include links to other sites, but not just a list of links – use annotations or some other means of indicating their relevance to you]
      • Contact Information [since these will be web mounted I suggest just using an email address rather than a street address or phone number]
  • Create a Dreamweaver template. It must be used for at least two of the pages [it can be used for all of them if you wish]. Additional templates can be created for some or all of the other pages if you wish, but this is not required.
  • A clear navigation scheme should be devised and used for all pages
  • Each page must provide the date when the web page was constructed/updated [except the splash page -- you can include the date there if you wish, but it's not required]
  • Each page should contain a mix of graphics and text as appropriate [that is, some pages might include only text or only graphics if that best suits the purpose of the given page]
  • Both internal/relative and external/absolute links must be used
  • All media files [images, sound, movies, etc.] mustd be in a folder named media [it can have subfolders if needed]
  • The Portfolio should be designed to be viewable at a 1024x768 screen resolution
  • The Portfolio should be designed to be viewed using Internet Explorer 6.x, but should also be reasonably viewable in Netscape 7.x and Firefox 1.5+.

You must comply with basic copyright regulations. If you wish to use an image or other media from someone else’s web site you must obtain their permission. As well, a citation of and a link to that site must be provided in your portfolio.
