Abstract
This project examines the issues surrounding the cataloguing and
classification of Canadian materials for Canadian libraries. Although
Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Classification
are widely accepted, they have some significant limitations when put into
practice for Canadian material. In an effort to effectively represent
Canadian materials, Library and Archives Canada has created the Canadian
Subject Headings and the FC class, which are designed to compliment and
augment LCSH and LCC.
CSH, class FC, and the lesser-used Sears List of Subject Headings: Canadian
Companion all help librarians catalogue Canadian material. Even though these
resources do much to address the limitations of LCSH, they are not without
their problems.
In order to understand the issues facing Canadian cataloguers today, we
interviewed librarians, reviewed the existing literature, examined posts on
the AUTOCAT listserve, and studied the backgrounds and evolution of LCSH,
CSH, Sears, and the FC Class.
