Universality

Particular aspects of the UDC make it very amenable to universal use. Specifically it is:

highly flexible and effective system for the classification of all kinds of information in any medium
continuously revised, modified and expanded to accommodate the increasing output of information in all disciplines
independent of any particular language or script
consists of Arabic numerals, mathematics symbols, and common punctuation marks—making it optimal for machine-searching
in worldwide use, and has been published in whole or in part in 23 different languages
there are 3 print editions of the UDC available: the pocket edition (abridged), the standard edition, and the expanded edition
has a long history of international co-operation in its revision and management of the classification
in 1992, the UDC Consortium (UDCC) was established by the International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID) and UDC publishers of the Dutch, English, French, Japanese and Spanish editions to manage the UDC. The UDCC was created to reflect a more broadly based, and financially autonomous, organization to administer the UDC
