LIBR 513: Cataloguing Special and Non-Book Materials
Winter 2009-2010, Term 2
This cataloguing course is recommended for anyone who expects to pursue work as a cataloguer and relevant to any information professional driven to best utilize bibliographic tools. Thank you for joining this class where we will learn the current and emerging practices of non-book cataloguing.

“My goal as a library professional is to constantly move ahead as an agent of information access. 17 years of experience in public, special and all manner of academic library systems has built a vision of library information services reliant on usable information systems. As an instructor it is planned that LIBR513 offer foundation skills classes which respond to not just to course outcomes but also to learning goals students bring to their course of study and their view of themselves as librarians.”
Course format. Lectures and labs, weekly Fridays 8am start in Room 260.
Assignments introduced in labs and completed after class hours for individual submission. Peer collaboration is recommended but not always required.
Assignment #1 Basic description and MARC coding 5 %
Assignment #2 Access points 15%
Assignment #3 Cataloguing in Context Short Essay 20%
Assignment #4 Creating Metadata-- overall 45%, each section 15%
Part 1 Audio materials; Part 2 Video content; Part 3 Non-book, graphic or other information package
Assignment #5 Creating Metadata: exercises 15%

Part one of the course Jan 8 to Jan 29: Cataloguing Skills building and Name Access Lessons from Part II of the AACR cataloguing rules
Part two of the course Feb 5 to April 9: Per Format Cataloguing Classes based on Part I Chapters of the AACR descriptive cataloguing rules, with some reference to new trends in bibliographic standards.
