The Anti-Doping Thesaurus: User Guide
This User Guide provides help on using the Anti-Doping Thesaurus. It includes the following FAQ on using the Thesaurus, and a Quick Reference Window, which opens in a separate pane and may be viewed simultaneously with the Thesaurus.
How is the Thesaurus organized?
The Thesaurus has three display options:
- The Alphabetical Display lists all doping terminology in alphabetical order, and includes features to help identify preferred terms and lead you to associated terms (more on these features below).
- The Hierarchical Display lists all doping terminology in alphabetical order, and clearly shows all relationships for a term.
- The Top Term Display arranges all preferred terms into hierarchical categories.
How do I use the Thesaurus to find information?
Take a moment to define what you're looking for:
- Describe the topic in your own words.
- Divide the topic into major concepts.
- Look in the Thesaurus for the words describing each concept.
In the Thesaurus, the term used for a concept is called a preferred term. It is indicated by bold text, as in the example below:
results management
The Thesaurus includes tools to lead you to the preferred term for a concept. It includes entry terms, which are terms that have the same or similar meaning as a preferred term. A cross-reference (indicated by the word USE) leads from the entry term to the appropriate preferred term:
results
USE: results management
A preferred term will include a reciprocal cross-reference (indicated by the abbreviation UF, which stands for USE FOR) to a relevant entry term:
results management
UF: results
To help locate the appropriate preferred term for a concept, the Thesaurus includes scope notes (indicated by SN) that explain the meaning or usage of a term:
results management
SN: A report from a laboratory or other approved testing
facility that identifies in a sample the presence of a
prohibited substance or its metabolites, markers, or
evidence of the use of a prohibited method.
How can the Thesaurus help me focus my search for information?
The Thesaurus can be used to locate terms that are more specific (or more general) than a concept you have identified. You can do this by navigating up or down the hierarchy that a term is located in. Terms that are narrower than a term are indicated by NT (Narrower Term):
results management
NT: provisional suspensions
Terms that are broader than a term are indicated by BT (Broader Term):
provisional suspensions
BT: results management
How can the Thesaurus help me extend my search?
The Thesaurus can lead you to terms that are related to a concept you have identified. A related term is indicated by RT (Related Term):
results management
RT: analysis of samples
