Development

The Anti-Doping Thesaurus was developed by the WADA Thesaurus Committee, comprising three (fictional) staff members of the World Anti-Doping Agency: the Agency's librarian, the communications officer, and the publications editor. In developing the Thesaurus, the Committee used two primary resources: the Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Controlled Vocabularies (ANSI/NISO Z39.19-2005) and Jean Aitchison's Thesaurus Construction and Use: A Practical Manual, 4th edition.

Objectives of the Thesaurus

The Anti-Doping Thesaurus is aimed at supporting athletes in retrieving documents from the World Anti-Doping Agency's website, and providing natural language entry points into WADA's jargon-rich literature. The Thesaurus aims to serve three main purposes:

  • Provide translation: To provide a means for converting the natural language of athletes, authors, and indexers into a vocabulary that can be used for indexing and retrieval.
  • Enhance searching: To aid athletes in searching for and retrieving documents from the WADA website and the larger body of WADA literature.
  • Facilitate browsing: To provide consistent and clear hierarchies in a navigation system to help athletes locate desired documents.

The thesaurus attempts to meet the needs of its users by providing:

  • Rich entry vocabulary: Everyday terminology and slang familiar to athletes are incorporated into the thesaurus as entry terms, leading users to preferred terms.
