The Daily Grind

user guide

How to use the Daily Grind coffee thesaurus. This thesaurus is a collection of words about coffee: primarily those related to its aroma, flavour, and roasts.

Preferred and Non-Preferred Terms -- The alphabetical thesaurus is a list of preferred and non-preferred terms. Preferred terms are listed in boldface. When searching the thesaurus, users should use preferred terms; however, should they enter a non-preferred term, they are directed to the correct preferred term. Non-preferred terms are in normal font.

e.g. New England roast
      USE: light roast

<Node Labels> -- are terms displayed in angle brackets. They are node labels because they are too general for indexing purposes. They are inserted to help users locate more specific preferred terms.

e.g. <processing-related tastes>

Qualifiers -- The terms that appear in parentheses following thesaurus terms are qualifiers. Their function is to help distinguish homographs, for example, cocoa (taste) is distinguished from cocoa (aroma) by the qualifiers in parentheses.

e.g. cocoa (taste)

Scope Notes -- are short explanations we use to define terms that have other meanings outside of our thesaurus.

e.g. clean taste

SN: Coffee whose characteristics come directly from the coffee fruit without addition or interference   from mistakes in processing (Home Coffee Roasting, 1996).

Relationships -- The thesaurus uses the following words and abbreviations to indicate the relationships among terms:

BT -- An abbreviation for broader term. It is used to show whether the selected term is broader or more specific in relation to another term.

NT -- An abbreviation for narrower term. It indicates that a term is narrower  or more specific in meaning than the chosen term.

RT -- An abbreviation for related term. A term that is associated with another term in the controlled vocabulary. It is conceptually, but not hierarchically linked to the term.

UF -- An abbreviation for used for. Used for lists the non-preferred terms linked to a preferred term.

USE -- USE serves to resolve problems caused by synonymy by directing users from synonyms and non-preferred terms to the preferred term. For example: American Roast USE medium roast.

See also our discussion of Relationship Structures.

Displays -- The Daily Grind Thesaurus has four displays:

Alphabetical Display -- A display of all the terms in our thesaurus. The preferred terms are distinguished from the others by their bold font.

Hierarchical Display -- Lists all the terms in our thesaurus, but organizes them from the most general to the most specific. Because of its technical nature, it is intended for use by indexers, not the general public.

Rotated List Display -- An alphabetical display of all the significant words contained in the descriptors listed in a thesaurus of indexing terms, in which each word is treated as a filing unit.

Top Terms Display -- A list of the most general terms in our thesaurus.
