How to Use the Thesaurus

Dame Edna's Finishing School for Uncouth Canines has created a thesaurus of terminology to assist our clients who are new to the world of dog showing, and who may be unfamiliar with the sometimes odd or arcane language.

The thesaurus is based on the Guidelines for the Construction, Format and Management of Monolingual Thesauri (ANSI/NISO Z39.19-2003).

While using the thesaurus, you'll notice that some terms are shown in bold face text, others are italicized, and others still are in regular typeface. You will also notice node brackets like this < >, and abbreviations such as BT, RT, NT, and SN. These abbreviations and conventions are explained below:

Abbreviations

BT – indicates a broader term (the next term up in the hierarchy)
NT – indicates a narrower term (the next level down in the hierarchy)
RT – indicates a related term
SN – is a scope note which explains the scope of the usage of the term within the thesaurus
USE – indicates that the preferred term needs to be used
UF – means "used for" and indicates that a term is non-preferred

Conventions

< > - indicates a non-indexed term
Bold Faced Text: Indicates a preferred term
Italicized Text - indicates a non-preferred term; accompanied by "USE" to guide you to the preferred term.

The Thesaurus of Dog Show Obedience Terms presents two types of term displays: an alphabetical display and a hierarchical display. Both the alphabetical and hierarchical displays are available for downloading in word document format.

In addition, we have included a sample of Key Word in Context (KWIC) and Keyword out of Context (KWOC) displays.
