BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Organization

Smart Suits is a retail business specializing in menswear with an emphasis on business suits. Founded by Stuart Smart and his brother, Sigmund in 1985, Smart Suits has its origin as a small made-to-measure supplier of men's suits. Having worked in a clothing factory and upscale menswear store, the Smart Brothers decided to open their own shop with $10,000 in capital. The store's first advertisement slogan was "Dress Smart at Smart's!", a promise of Smart Suits' commitment that remains unchanged to this day.

Over the years, Smart Suits has grown from a single 1000-square-foot shop in Vancouver into a five-outlet business that generates $15 million in annual sales. Besides made-to-measure suits, Smart Suits also supplies ready-to-wear suits and clothing accessories from major labels. Customers visit Smart Suits not just for quality clothing, but also for the personalized service that they can expect from dedicated staff.

The company's strategic plan in the next five years is to expand to other major cities in Canada. With the business expansion, new staff will have to be recruited and trained (especially those with little or no product knowledge of suits). The company will also launch new marketing campaigns.

With the new business needs in mind, Smart Suits decided that it would require a thesaurus on men's suits. The C&C Consultation Firm has been hired by Smart Suits to develop this thesaurus. Besides functioning as an in-house reference manual, the thesaurus will be used in the training of new staff including front-line sales associates, staff who handle procurement, and marketing specialists.
