ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURE OF INDEXING LANGUAGE IN THESAURUS

The Smart Suits Thesaurus is prepared using the Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Thesauri (ANSI/NISO Z39.19 - 1993). Sections and subsections of the Standard are cited as parenthetical references in the following.

Suitability for the Environment

The Smart Suits Thesaurus is designed to be used in the fashion retail environment. As the subject of fashion is neither arcane nor scientific, the thesaurus would incorporate both common language terms as well as fashion jargons that are actually spoken or communicated in the staff's daily course of work. Hence, user warrant and literary warrant are important considerations in the development of the thesaurus. While high specificity in the indexing language will be desired by the marketing and sales staff, it is not necessarily so for the staff taking charge of procurement. Therefore, a number of display options must be available to users who have differing levels of information needs.

The Smart Suits Thesaurus will be implemented and maintained by the marketing staff with input (feedback) from the sales staff since both groups are the major users. As thesaurus maintenance is one of the many job responsibilities of the marketing staff, it is likely to be carried out on a periodic basis (say, every six months) rather than monthly. The thesaurus will be expanded to allow for future product lines should such a need arise.
