RFID: Tool for Libraries

Home | Introduction | History

Introduction

Radio Frequency Identification or RFID is a material identification system that uses radio frequency and microchip technologies to provide the ability to track items suitably equipped from a distance without a line of sight. In the context of a library it provides the ability to give a unique identifer to library items in a manner analogous to that of barcode labeling which allows a library to track a particular item's status.

Many larger libraries are adopting this technology or are actively planning to do so. This site will investigate RFID in the context of libraries and its application therein.
