links and selected resources

(a few selected examples of libraries with extensive services for Deaf Communities, some overlap with the list below).

Internet Portal Sites
(web pages with comprehensive links to Deaf Culture related sites and suggested reading lists):

There are so many excellent lists of websites and organizations related to Deaf Culture already on the Internet that it would be hard to produce anything more comprehensive (or even close). I have included links to a few of those sites instead of trying to create another:

Subject-based Deaf and Hard of Hearing Resources: an extensive portal site offering links organized by subject area on topics ranging from Deaf conferences to Deaf entertainment to Deaf Asian Americans (from Rochester Institute for Technology).
http://wally.rit.edu/internet/subject/deafness.html

Sound and Fury Resources Page: an assortment of Internet links and suggested books on the subjects of cochlear implants and Deaf Culture in general (created in support of the PBS documentary Sound and Fury about cochlear implants).
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/soundandfury/resources.html

aslinfo.com links: an extensive list of links with 42 different subjects in a drop-down menu, each one with its own pages of links (created by a professional ASL interpreter).
http://aslinfo.com/

Gallaudet University's Deaf Related Resources page: provides access to various guides bibliographies, pathfinders, research guides, Internet resources, Deaf periodical and more. Focus on university level research and study (created by Gallaudet University Librarians).
http://library.gallaudet.edu/dr/

Deaf Empowerment's Links to Deaf related sites: a page of Deaf-related subject areas, each linking to their own page of links (created by Deaf Empowerment, a service provider for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities in Wisconsin).
http://www.deafe.org/links/links.htm

Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center's Information on Deafness page: general information on Deaf-related topics with a focus on children, teens and education. The center is associated with Gallaudet University and runs two demonstration schools (elementary and secondary), as well as providing general support to deaf and hard of hearing students and their families. Good resources for parents of d/Deaf children.

The Deaf Resource Library is a virtual library compiled by Karen Nakamura, an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Yale University, who has been studying Deaf cultures and communities in Japan and the United States for over a decade.

  • aslinfo.com: this website provides a fairly in-depth overview of issues and information related to Deaf culture, history and ASL.
  • Deaf President Nowcelebrates the 15 year anniversary of the student movement at Gallaudet University which succeeded in getting a Deaf President elected at Gallaudet for the first time in its 124 year history. (Also, a Guide for Teachers).
