Libraries: Services
for and by Deaf Communities
There are many factors to
consider when trying to develop
library services for Deaf communities. Basic accessibility is
important, but the library may lose potential users if their
services, events and resources are not also relevant to the range of
people in d/Deaf communities.
There have been efforts within the library community to create guidelines for
providing service to d/Deaf communities by both the The American Library Association (ALA)29. and
International Federation of Library Associations and Institution (IFLA)30.
Most of the guidelines in these two documents are similar, but the ALA
explicitly recognizes
Deaf Culture and incorporates it into their guidelines whereas IFLA
does not.
