LIBR 600/ARST 600: Advanced Seminar in Research Methods (6)-- COurse Description

 Course Restrictions : Admission to the SLAIS Ph.D. program

Course Goal : The goal of this course is to equip students with the theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills necessary to successfully carry out doctoral level research.

Course Objectives

This course will:

  • Introduce students to the research process and research design
  • Expose students to various strategies and techniques of enquiry in the social sciences and humanities
  • Provide students with the capacity to critically evaluate research in the fields of LIS and Archival Studies
  • Provide students with the skills necessary for the effective communication of research in oral presentations and in writing
  • Prepare students to undertake research for their dissertation
Course Topics :

    • Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches to scholarly inquiry
    • Philosophical assumptions and ideological perspectives underpinning qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches
    • Strategies of inquiry associated with the various approaches
    • Specific techniques of data collection, analysis and writing
    • Validation and verification of findings
    • Research ethics
    • Evaluating research
    • Writing a dissertation proposal
