LIBR 569G: Current Issues and Trends in Library Services and Information Science: Topics in Academic Librarianship (1-3) -- Course Description

PREREQUISITES : LIBR 500, 510, 540, 560

GOALS :

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the role of academic libraries and librarians within postsecondary institutions in Canada and elsewhere. By successful course completion, students will understand the role of the Library in supporting the teaching and research mission of postsecondary institutions, the relationship of librarian, faculty and students, and the history and current trends in scholarship and in academic librarianship. Students will be able to assess and apply the results of current research in academic librarianship and think critically and creatively about the challenges engendered by current issues and trends.

OBJECTIVES :


Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe some of the key factors in the history of academic libraries in Canada, Europe, Australia and the United States.
  2. Explain the composition and governance responsibilities of University and College governing bodies and their impact on academic libraries.
  3. Explain the relationship and roles academic libraries play with respect to other academic service departments (IT, student services, teaching support).
  4. Identify and respond to the diversity of academic library user service requirements (researcher, teacher, graduate, undergraduate, discipline, ESL, students with disabilities).
  5. Discuss the requirements and issues relating to current successful collection management in the academic library setting.
  6. Discuss and analyse emerging trends relating to acquisition organization and delivery of library materials.
  7. Discuss current and emerging trends in technology in academic libraries.
  8. Discuss the merits of various library organizational models.
  9. Describe the role of the individual academic library in the broader Canadian and North American context.
  10. Understand the statistical measures that may be used for management purposes and demonstrate how those statistics can be compared to those gathered at provincial and national levels.
  11. Be familiar with employee organizations and identify key factors in effective human resources practice in the academic library setting.

  • The elements of the academic library: collections, services, support services.
  • The individual academic library in the broader library context.
  • Emerging trends in academic libraries.
