LIBR 542E: SERVICES FOR YOUTH: SERVICES TO AT-RISK AND SPECIAL NEEDS YOUNG ADULTS (1) -- COURSE DESCRIPTION
PREREQUISITES: LIBR 500, 501, 503
GOALS
The three essential goals of this course are:- To provide students with a deeper understanding of at-risk young adults and young adults with special needs
- To provide students with an understanding of the importance of including and involving special needs and at-risk young adults in all library planning, programming, and services
- To provide students with an introduction to collections, programs, and partnerships with other youth-serving community agencies for special needs and at-risk young adults
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the various categories and needs of special needs and at-risk youth – for example, homeless and street young adults, young adults with disabilities, young adults in foster care, incarcerated young adults, socio-economically disadvantaged young adults, First Nations young adults, immigrant and minority young adults, delinquent and/or violent young adults, abused youth, GLBT young adults, teen parents, etc.
- Describe how to build collections for special needs and at-risk young adults
- Assess programming for and outreach to special needs and at-risk young adults
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of networking with other youth-serving agencies

- Categories and needs of special needs and at-risk young adults
- Categories of at-risk behaviours
- Role of the public library in meeting needs of special needs and at-risk young adults
- Collection management
- Programming for special needs and at-risk young adults and their parents and caregivers, and involving special needs and at-risk young adults in the planning process
- Outreach services and liaisons with schools and youth-serving agencies
