PREREQUISITES: LIBR 500, 501, 503
GOALS: The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and appreciation of contemporary children’s literature of the last thirty years in print, audiovisual, and electronic format required for the development of a children’s collection and children’s readers advisory services.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of children’s print, audiovisual, and electronic materials of the last 30 years: their types, genres, formats, and content
- Demonstrate an ability to relate the knowledge of children’s print, audiovisual and electronic materials to children’s information needs and recreational interests through the different stages of child development and learning
- Identify and discuss an international selection of authors and illustrators of the last thirty years
- Discuss major developments, trends, and issues in contemporary children’s literature
- Discuss the development and current state of Canadian children’s literature
- Discuss the development and current state of multicultural children’s literature
- Discuss the process of publishing for children and the role of the author, illustrator, editor, and publisher;
- Develop and apply criteria for the selection and evaluation of audiovisual materials and electronic resources for children
- Discuss intellectual freedom challenges to all types of children’s materials
- Demonstrate a professional attitude towards intellectual freedom challenges (following the CLA Bill of Rights)
