ARST 545: Advanced Arrangement & Description Of Archival Documents (3) -- Course Description

[PREVIOUSLY: ARST 593E – Advanced Arrangement and Description of Archival Documents

PREREQUISITES: MAS and Dual Students: completion of MAS core plus 12 credits of which 6 credits must be ARST courses
MLIS students: ARST 510, ARST 516 and completion of the MLIS core courses, plus permission of the SLAIS Graduate Adviser

 

GOALS: The goal of this course is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of classical and contemporary theories, methodologies, and models for arranging, describing, and providing access to archival documents.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To deepen students' understanding of the classical literature concerning the arrangement of archival documents and contemporary interpretations of that literature.
  • To familiarize students with various perspectives concerning the nature and purpose of archival description in the twenty-first century.
  • To introduce students to some proposed models for enhancing provenance-based access points to archival descriptions.

  • arrangement and description in the context of personal papers
  • postmodern perspectives on archival description
  • archival description and authenticity
  • name authority control for persons and corporate bodies
