ARST 540 : ARCHIVAL PUBLIC SERVICES (3) -- course DESCRIPTION

 

REQUIRED PRE-REQUISITES: ARST 500, ARST 510, ARST 515, ARST 587. [ARST 500 is not required of Joint student who have already taken LIBR 500]
REQUIRED CO-REQUISITES : ARST 516, ARST 520, ARST 573

GOALS : To give you an understanding archival reference service and public programs designed to increase enjoyment and appreciation of archives

OBJECTIVES :

  1. To provide you with an understanding of the principles and concepts applying to archivists’ duty to make holdings accessible.
  2. To provide you with an understanding of the uses and users of archives .
  3. To provide you with an understanding of the social dynamic, organization, and provision of reference service.
  4. To provide you with an understanding of the development and implementation of programs to promote greater appreciation, use, and accessibility of archives.

CONTENT :

  1. General principles and concepts associated with accessibility of archives.
  2. The types of use made of archival material .
  3. The classes of users of archives .
  4. The interaction of archivists and users in reference service .
  5. The organization, delivery, and evaluation of reference service .
  6. Legal and security concerns in reference service .
  7. Ethical concerns in reference service.
  8. Planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs to increase appreciation, use, and accessibility of archives .
