Conference Support for SLAIS Students

Conference attendance is an important part of both professional and academic life. It offers the opportunity to hear about new research and practice and generates new ideas and inspiration. It is also a great way to meet others who share your professional and research interests. There are many conferences worth attending, from the graduate student research conferences held at UBC to local, national and international conferences of organizations such as the Canadian Library Association (CLA), Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA), American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T), Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) and Children’s Literature Association (ChLA).

In support of conference attendance, every year SLAIS provides financial assistance to a student in each of its programs (MAS, MLIS, MACL and PhD) under the following programs:

Student to CLA (MLIS or Dual Student)
At the request of CLA, every year SLAIS nominates a student as part of the “Student to CLA” program. The nominated student acts as a volunteer at the conference in return for registration and shared accommodation. SLAIS provides a travel stipend of up to $500. Calls for nominations typically appear a few months before the conference, and are circulated by email to the student discussion list. A faculty committee selects the nominee from applications submitted to the Director.

Student to ACA (MAS or Dual Student)
The ACA provides financial support for students who are selected by the ACA Conference Program Committee to speak at the student session. Also, all student members are able to register for the conference at a reduced rate. SLAIS will provide a travel stipend of up to $500 for one person or $250 each for two persons attending the conference. Preference will be given to students whose paper has been accepted for a regular session who do not receive funding from other sources, students who are responsible for the UBC archival research booth at the conference, students who are members of the UBC ACA Student Chapter, and students who have distinguished themselves in some leadership role throughout the year. Calls for applications typically appear a few months before the conference, and are circulated by email to the student discussion list. A faculty committee selects the award recipients from applications submitted to the Director.

MACL Student Conference Support
Travel support to a total of $500 will be made available in an academic year to support conference attendance for a student in the MACL program. Conferences should be related to the program, such as the Children’s Literature Association Conference. Preference will be given to students who are presenting a paper or poster, or contributing to conference organization. The availability of travel funds will be announced in early September with a deadline for application, via letter to the Director, by March 15.

PhD Student Conference Support
Travel support to a total of $500 will be made available in an academic year to support conference attendance for a student in the PhD program. Preference will be given to students who are presenting a paper or poster, or contributing to conference organization. The availability of travel funds will be announced in early September with a deadline for application, via letter to the Chair of Doctoral Studies, by October 15.

Other travel funding for graduate students:
Full-time Graduate Students who are presenting a paper are eligible (once during a degree program) for funding from the Graduate Student Travel Fund; for details see http://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/graduate-student-travel-fund
