SLAIS IN the Barber
Centre
SLAIS faculty, staff and students are enjoying the opportunities for interaction and collaboration with academic and professional colleagues afforded by the School’s outstanding new facilities at the heart of UBC, in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. As information professionals, our goals are very much in keeping with those of the Learning Centre, with its focus on providing and enhancing access to information, knowledge, and innovative teaching. In our graduate programs in Archival Studies, Library and Information Studies, and Children’s Literature, we recognize the pivotal role of information in today’s society and the need to deliver it to our users in new and innovative ways. SLAIS educates librarians, archivists and information professionals who are adept at handling today’s rapidly changing information environment using modern technologies, while maintaining an emphasis on the fundamental role of information and information organizations. Building on this strong foundation, our curricula offer the opportunity to specialize in support of various career interests and goals – from youth services to records management and more. Finally, the many opportunities available to students for national and international experience via professional practica and internships as well as our very successful co-op program ensure that our graduates have the background and confidence to succeed in their new roles.
In support of The University of British
Columbia’s mission, the School of Library, Archival
and Information Studies prepares professionals to exercise
leadership in planning, implementing and promoting
the preservation, organization and effective use of
society’s recorded information and ideas.
