of Interest
Professor Eastwood's main areas of interest are the appraisal of archives, the
juridical context of archives, archival public services, and the theory and methodology
of arrangement and description of archives. He has also written about many other
subjects, in particular about archival education.
Biographical Sketch
Terry Eastwood joined the faculty in 1981. He was the first professor hired
to teach in the Master of Archival Studies Program, and acted as the chair
of the program from 1981 until the end of June 2000. Before taking up his
position in the School, he was an archivist in the Manuscript and Government
Records Division of the Provincial Archives of British Columbia and Secretary
of the Public Documents Committee charged with the disposition of the records
of the government of British Columbia. He is a Past President of the Association
of Canadian Archivists and editor of its journal, Archivaria, a Fellow of
the Society of American Archivists and past member of its Council. From 1991-1995,
he was a member of the Planning Committee on Descriptive Standards of the
Bureau of Canadian Archivists that developed the Canadian Rules for Archival
Description.
For several years in the mid-1990s he was a visiting professor teaching part-time
at Mid-Sweden University in Harnosand, Sweden. He is currently Editor in Chief
of the Archivist's Library Series published by Kluwer academic publishers located
in the Netherlands.
Statements of Research & Scholarship
For the past seven years, Professor Eastwood's research has concentrated on
electronic records. From 1994-97, he took part with Luciana Duranti in a
project investigating the integrity (i.e., the reliability and authenticity)
of active electronic records, conducted in collaboration with the United
States Department of Defense. He was a co-investigator in the InterPARES
project investigating the long-term preservation of electronic. He is also
currently working on a book on the subject of Archives and Democratic Society.
