MARC Record Examples
Example #1
This is an example of a record for which details regarding Internet access is incorporated into the record of a print serial. Taken from UBC's Infogate.
Field Ind1 Ind2 Sub Data 022 $a 0036-8075 130 0 0 $a Science (American Association for the Advancement of Science : 1883) 245 1 0 $a Science. 260 0 0 $a Cambridge, Mass. : $b The Science company, 1883-85 ; $a New York : $b The Science company [etc], $c 1885- 310 $a Weekly, except last week in December. 362 0 0 $a v.1-23, Feb. 9, 1883-Mar. 23, 1894; new ser., v.1, Jan. 4, 1895- 500 $a Since Jan. 1901 the official proceedings and most of the papers of the American Association for the Advancement of Science have been included in Science. 515 $a Vols. 93- lack "new series" designation. 530/538 $a Available also online via the World Wide Web ; access restricted to institutions with a site license. 547 $a Title varies: 1883-92, Science: an illustrated journal; 1893-94, Science; 1895-June 1910, Science: a weekly journal devoted to the advancement of science. 710 2 0 $a American Association for the Advancement of Science. 856 4 1 $u http://toby.library.ubc.ca/ejournals/infopage.cfm?id=2985
Because this record is not typically known for its availability online, it is justifiable for the Internet version of the journal not to have its own record yet. Another issue to consider here is that this resource is not exclusively available as an electronic resource. Therefore, how should one catalogue this journal is such a way that distinguishes print holdings from "holdings" available electronically?

The underscored call number is a hypothetical link to holdings information. I thought it would be a nice luxury to have the Internet link readily accessible visually at the top of the record. For this particular record, I did not feel that making the title a hyperlink to the ejournal would be a good idea, since there are print holdings available.
Example #2
This example was originally borrowed from Chapter 8, Part 2 of Nancy Olson's Cataloging of Audiovisual Materials and Other Special Materials. However, because the sample website had changed in various signficant ways, I have modified the record to reflect the changes.

In this record, I have also decided not to encode the title as the link because I feel that it is important for the patron to easily see the address in case s/he wishes to copy it down.
Example #3
The next example is a completely independent cataloguing attempt of mine. I would suppose that the process which I went through to create this record is typical of cataloguing websites of organizations:
Field Ind1 Ind2 Sub Data 245 0 0 $a L'Arche Canada $h [electronic resource] : $b [home page]. 246 1 0 $i More generally referred to as: $a L'Arche 256 $a Computer data. 260 $a [Montreal, Quebec]: $b L'Arche Canada. 310 $a Updated regularly. 516 $a Home page. 538

Example #4
Creating the following record required me to make decisions and pay attention to details I had not anticipated!
Field Ind1 Ind2 Sub Data 245 0 0 $a American beauty $h [electronic resource] . 256 $a Computer interactive multimedia. 260 $a [Los Angeles, CA]: $b [DreamWorks SKG], $c 1999. 310 $a Updated occasionally. 516 $a Home page. 538 $a System requirements: Macromedia Flash Plugin. 538
$a Available through Internet. 500 $a Title from first screen. 500 $a Site created by Fullerene Productions. 500 $a Plays music and sound bytes in the interactive "Front Page" and the non-interactive "Flash Trailer." Content in "Front Page" and "Flash Trailer" consists of moving image sequences. 520 $a Promotional site for the movie, this website plays selected film and music sequences, enhanced by sound and text of lines from the movie. 500 $a Description of resources as of: 3:30pm. 20 October 1999. 710 2 0 $a DreamWorks SKG. 710 2 0 $a Fullerene Productions. 856 4 0 $u http://www.americanbeauty-thefilm.com/main.html 856 4 2 $3 The Official Motion Picture Web Site from DreamWorks and Amazon.com $u http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/video/misc/dreamworks/american-beauty/ab-home.html/002-9582822-0960208
Creating this record caused me a lot of consideration of who is the "true" statement of responsibility. Is it the site creators themselves? Or the producers of the movie, who commissioned (and funded) the project? Because this is a virtual resource, how is publication information to be denoted? Is place of publication credited to the location of the site creators who put the content together in a creative way, or to the movie creators who supplied all of the content to be used, and probably made the decisions on how the content was to be put together?
This record also gave me an opportunity to use the 856 in a supplementary way.
